Mr. Joel Pedersen has been a strong leader and advocate for positive school culture throughout his career as an educator. His servant leadership attitude has created a powerful movement in southeast Iowa, which allows educators, community and students to feel part of a family not just a school. His passion for building positive relationships has radically changed the culture of education in southeast Iowa. He is a leader in bully prevention, and creating a nurturing and enriching environment for all kids to learn.

While at Davis County Middle School, Mr. Pedersen was selected as the 2010 Iowa Middle School Principal of the Year for his direction and guidance in promoting positive school culture and bully prevention.  Mr. Pedersen has been the Superintendent of Cardinal Community School District in Wapello County for the past four years. During this time, he has led the district in making great strides to enhance school culture. Although the Cardinal CSD was not initially selected as a recipient of the Iowa Safe and Supportive Schools Grant, Mr. Pedersen decided to have Cardinal participate as a non-funded member of the program. Through his leadership, Cardinal has shown substantial gains on the Iowa Safe and Supportive Schools Survey over the past four years.

Joel’s compassionate leadership style encompasses the importance of building relationships. The idea of building relationships is becoming more distinct daily, and is having a major impact on creating compelling connections and improving student achievement. Mr. Pedersen understands the influence one person can have on a student’s life. Therefore, Mr. Pedersen strives to energize all educators by modeling what it takes to make a difference for all children. Mr. Pedersen is leading Cardinal CSD to be one of the first schools in the state of Iowa to achieve Safe School Certification, and to be that #oneperson.
